Cutting your energy bills

Cutting your energy bills
January 21, 2013

There’s more competition between energy suppliers than there’s been before, meaning that they’re keen to both attract new customers as well as hold on to existing ones. This has led to several companies including EDF Energy promising to fix prices as far away as 2015, helping you to budget for the longer term by knowing exactly what you’ll be paying.  There’s no commitment to stay with the same company for this period which means you can guarantee the prices and then leave if you spot a better offer at a later date, so we thoroughly recommend these types of deals from the big suppliers.

One of the hardest aspects is actually trying to find out where you can get the best prices. It’s all very well getting them fixed for the next 3 years but if it’s not at a competitive rate then you’re no better off than you were before. Companies known as ‘aggregators’ (such as uSwitch.com) are the best option here, as they do the leg work for you and compare all of the tariffs from the major suppliers. It takes the hassle away from checking every supplier’s own site and can help you to save over £200 per year. Best of all the services are free, you just enter your current usage and postage and you’ll be presented with all available options plus total cost saving compared to your current bills.

The final tip is around the way you pay your bills. You’ll actually benefit from the lowest prices in most cases by setting up a direct debit. This way the energy suppliers don’t have to constantly chase you for money, saving them time and resources in the process, which in turn results in a cost saving for you.
